Session Sneak Peek: Beth Adele, PhD, MBA

BETH ADELE,PHD, MBA, CHAIR AND DIRECTOR, OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY, joined Oklahoma City University (OCU) as its Chair of the Mass Communications Department in the fall of 2019. Since then, she has added the titles of Associate Professor and Director of the Nonprofit Leadership department. Prior to serving OCU, she was the Director of Marketing at Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma. Beth as also served as the Acting Chair and Assistant to the Dean at Cameron University’s School of Business, as well as the Director of Career Services and Instructor of Marketing at the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) where she was instrumental in the creation of the Veteran Higher Education Resources Office.
Beth earned her Ph.D. in Human Resource Development at The University of Texas at Tyler with an emphasis in organizational development and change management. Her dissertation focused on examining the beliefs, behaviors, and outcomes of managerial coaching. Beth is also a graduate of UCO with her Bachelor of Music and Master of Business Administration degrees. She is an alum of Leadership Edmond Class XXIX and holds a Nonprofit Management Certification from the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits as well as an Instructional Design Certification from the Association for Talent Development (ATD).
OSCPA: What makes your session "Facilitating Learning: Informal Workplace Interventions" unique?
Adele: I have studied certain informal workplace learning interventions throughout my education and get to share what I have learned. Not only will I provide snippets of my scholarly findings, but I will also focus on the value and implementation ideas for the practice of a few of the interventions, 360° Feedback, Mentoring, and Managerial Coaching.
OSCPA: What makes you passionate about teaching individuals the ins and outs of employee development?
Adele: Performance and job satisfaction are highly correlated with how an employee feels they are developing and the relationships they have with their managers. The facilitation of learning within an organization should be embedded in the culture beyond formal training and external consulting. Informal workplace learning can successfully occur in an office of any size and aid in organizational commitment and company success.
OSCPA: What do you hope attendees will take away from your session?
Adele: My session is designed to reintroduce workplace learning practices we all have heard about and perhaps participated in while discussing their values and methods of implementation in an organization of any size. I hope participants will be able to identify and consider a learning intervention applicable for themselves and their teams.
OSCPA: What are you most looking forward to at the OSCPA’s Annual Members Meeting?
Adele: Networking sessions! And the fantastic topics offered by the guest facilitators.
OSCPA: What is your favorite thing you’ve learned in your career thus far?
Adele: I can only pick one thing? Perhaps the one thing that affects many others is the understanding that I, alone, do not have to have perfect solutions. I can lean on the talents, skills, and experiences of others while finding moments of courage to try.
