Let Networking Keep You Connected

I know that I’m not alone when I admit that I’m a bit of an introvert. Being outgoing and overtly expressive around other people is not really one of my strengths. I’m one of those introverts who can “people” when I need to, but it is quite outside of my comfort zone, and in some scenarios, it will really stress me out.

It may come as a surprise to you that one of the most valuable benefits I have received from my OSCPA membership is the relationships that have been formed with my fellow members. I have truly enjoyed getting acquainted with other CPAs from across the state and around the nation at the various professional events I’ve attended.

We all come from diverse backgrounds and practice at firms or companies ranging from sole practitioner to international sized, but as CPAs, we also have much in common and there is a great deal we can learn from each other.

Networking is the process of making connections and building relationships. It involves exchanging ideas and information and can open doors to new opportunities. For introverts like me, this means stepping outside of a comfort zone to acquire invaluable social skills, as well as build self-confidence. You can put these skills to practical use throughout your entire professional life.

Whether you are a networking novice or a seasoned pro, the OSCPA provides a number of avenues to make connections and build relationships with others in the profession.

Evolve is the OSCPA’s member-only online social forum. From questions and discussions regarding regulations and technical matters to updates on advocacy efforts and more, Evolve is a great way to join the conversation and stay connected to your peers.

The OSCPA’s committees and resource pools offer meaningful ways to connect with other Society members with similar interests and make an impact on the future of the accounting profession. Whether you are in public accounting, industry or education, there are opportunities to share your passion and expertise by becoming involved with one of OSCPA’s committees or resource pools.

The OSCPA also has seven active chapters to help you connect with other CPAs in your region of the state. Each chapter has special meeting opportunities and events to help you get to know other CPAs in your area.

What better way to expand your knowledge and connect with your fellow professionals than by attending the OSCPA’s CPE Events? Over the past couple of years, we’ve all become adept at meeting virtually. While obtaining CPE via webcast is a viable option, and it is certainly convenient to have the flexibility of virtual attendance, there is no substitute for meeting in person. So, as you consider your many CPE options, plan to put your pants on and come engage with your fellow CPAs. The OSCPA offers monthly Lunch + Learns (free for members!), staple conferences, ethics and other great in-person options.

Business in the front, party in the back? Who needs a mullet when you can attend an OSCPA Mix & Mingle? Shake off that “boring accountant” stereotype and get to know other CPAs in a fun and relaxed atmosphere for outings that have included activities such as cocktails, pickle ball, bowling, giving back, and more.

For small firm practitioners, the OSCPA’s Small Firms Roundtables are an extra resource library. These roundtables offer a way to network with other professionals to discuss shared challenges and brainstorm solutions.

Together we can adapt and thrive as we connect with one another and build both professional and personal relationships through networking. Tap into your OSCPA membership to find networking options that are right for you.
