Q&A with Anoop Mehta, CPA, CGMA

Wire: What do you appreciate most about the CPA profession?
Mehta: I appreciate our people. People should be at the center of our practices and decisions; the chief focus for where we want the profession to go. I believe there are so many individuals in our profession that are there to lend a helping hand to support individuals growing both professionally and personally.

Wire: What goals do you hope to achieve as the Chair of the AICPA?
Mehta: Specifically, I have three areas where we must focus in the coming year:
  1. Help others grow to reach their potential;
  2. Diversify the pipeline of incoming new accountants and finance professionals; and
  3. Preserve the trust in the profession.

Wire: What advice would you give to a new or aspiring CPA?
Mehta: The journey to be a CPA is not done in isolation.  It depends on the support and guidance of other people. This includes those accountants who have gone before us, the employers willing to mentor, train and promote professionals and the families and friends who understand the efforts and sacrifices. My advice for new or aspiring CPAs is to not be afraid to ask for help. I know that there are many in our profession willing to lend a helping hand, you just need to ask.

I also encourage new or aspiring CPAs to get involved in our profession by volunteering their time to make this profession even better. There are so many ways to get involved either through the OSCPA or AICPA.

Wire: What excites you most about the direction the CPA profession is heading in?
Mehta: The thing that excites me is that we are staying ahead of the curve. We are constantly adapting to stay relevant. I am excited about the CPA Evolution that will incorporate skills of the future. I am excited about our firms, businesses and organizations stepping up to create strategies to address DEI goals and barriers in their workplaces. The profession is driving a new normal in corporate responsibility in the ESG space.
