This pivotal role will be instrumental in ensuring that our organization maintains compliance with federal and state tax regulations while strategically managing our tax positions to enhance our financial sustainability. The Director of Tax Accounting will be responsible for all aspects of corporate tax compliance to insure the corporation maintains its tax-exempt status. This position directs, coordinates, and manages the accounts payable, payroll, and tax accounting functions and ensures the preparation and timely filing and payment of all federal, state, and local taxes. This position also requires strong collaboration with various internal teams to promote efficient processes. The Director of Tax Accounting reports to the VP of Controller and Risk Management. Responsibilities
- Prepares all corporate federal tax returns, including Forms 990, 990T, and 5500, and others as required. Coordinates with independent accountants as required and works to ensure that the corporation’s tax-exemption status is maintained.
- Oversees the preparation and timely filing of all state and local income, sales, use, payroll, property, etc. tax returns.
- Manages the general accounting function including accounts payable, tax, and payroll.
- Manages accounting staff by establishing job duties and position requirements, hiring, training, motivating, reviewing performance, and rewarding performance. Serves as an escalation point for issues; resolves conflicts involving scheduling, resources, or technical problems.
- Monitors current regulatory developments and conducts research on federal, state, and local tax laws to insure the organization’s continued compliance. Prepares for changes in requirements.
- Manages the accounting and payroll operations budgets. Is responsible for the proactive identification of changes that might be required, developing plans to deal with those changes, and working with the controller for a resolution.
- Oversees tax audits and the maintenance of tax records and files and responds to inquiries from government agencies regarding tax filings, compliance, claims, and related matters.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Competencies
- Knowledge of: GAAP tax accounting principles and relevant IRS pronouncements; federal, state, and local tax laws and compliance; industry-standard tax software and ERP systems for data analysis and reporting; tax dispute and audit procedures; general accounting functions including payroll, accounts payable, budgeting, etc. . Payroll, sales tax, PeopleSoft, and e-file software.
- Skill in: advanced data analysis and modeling; research and problem-solving; accuracy and attention to detail; articulating complex tax concepts to all stakeholders; managing pressure and critical deadlines; written and verbal communication.
- Ability to: evaluate complex tax situations, identify optimal strategies, and anticipate potential consequences; remain current on evolving tax laws and accounting standards through ongoing education and training; work independently to manage tax functions and take ownership of projects; thrive in a constantly changing tax environment and adjust to new regulations and challenges quickly; motivate and lead a team of tax professionals, delegate tasks effectively, and provide mentorship.
Education Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university. Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in management of corporate general accounting functions including, but not limited to, tax, accounts payable, and payroll; tax compliance and planning; preparation and filing of all corporate tax return forms; tax audits and maintenance of records; hiring, training, motivating and reviewing of accounting department staff; and operating departmental budgets.
- Must pass a criminal history background check.
Physical Requirements
- Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms, and other printed materials and information.
- Hearing acuity for verbal communication, conversations, face-to-face interactions, and/or responses via telephone and telephone systems.
- Speaking ability for general communication and ability to clearly enunciate in conversations with others.
This is primarily a sedentary office classification although standing in work areas and walking between work areas may be required. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Positions in this classification occasionally bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Licenses Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
