Advocacy Continues for Professional Degree Recognition for Accounting Programs

October 12, 2026

The OSCPA continues to support efforts to have accounting programs recognized as professional degrees by the U.S. Department of Education. Recently, American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) President and CEO Mark Koziel sent a letter to Education Secretary Linda McMahon urging the department to include graduate accounting programs on its interim list of professional degrees.

The letter outlines how accounting meets the criteria for professional degree recognition, including the specialized education, professional skills and licensure requirements associated with becoming a CPA. This recognition is particularly important as federal student loan limits change, potentially affecting students pursuing graduate-level accounting education.

The OSCPA remains engaged in this issue alongside the AICPA and other state CPA societies, supporting broader advocacy efforts to ensure accounting is appropriately recognized.
