Senior Tax Preparer & Accounting Reviewer

Full-Time | 30–40 hours/week | Remote | $43–$53/hour

About the Role

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys reviewing bookkeeping work, preparing and reviewing business and individual tax returns, and ensuring clients’ financials are tax-ready year-round. You will serve as the backbone of accuracy, quality, and consistency while supporting a collaborative, high-trust environment.

Key Responsibilities

1. Monthly Bookkeeping Review (Quality Control)

  • Review monthly financial statements prepared by the bookkeeping team
  • Identify and correct issues related to: COGS, inventory mapping, owner draws/equity accounts, loans, payroll, fixed assets, depreciation, and intercompany activity
  • Provide clear review notes and guidance to bookkeepers
  • Ensure every client file is tax-ready throughout the year

2. Tax Preparation (Business & Individual)

  • Prepare and/or review business tax returns, including 1065 (partnerships/multi-member LLCs), 1120S (S-corps), 1120 (C-corps), and 1040 (individuals)
  • Prepare workpapers, tie-outs, depreciation schedules, M-1/M-2, and basis calculations
  • Handle extensions, amendments, and multi-state filings as needed

3. Specialized Accounting Support (Industry-Specific Training Provided)

  • Apply cannabis-specific accounting rules and workflows
  • Evaluate inventory processes and tie-outs
  • Review tax adjustments and ensure compliance with industry-specific regulations

4. Year-End & Tax Planning

  • Prepare annual and quarterly tax projections, estimated taxes, and entity-level planning recommendations
  • Conduct W-2 reasonable compensation reviews and rental property passive loss analysis
  • Support year-end tie-outs and finalize financials

5. Notice Handling & Client Support

  • Draft responses to IRS and state notices
  • Pull transcripts and reconcile payment histories
  • Serve as a technical resource for internal staff and clients
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with clients on tax and accounting matters

6. Systems & Process Improvement

  • Develop standardized workflows and improve monthly review processes
  • Document recurring issues and assist with training bookkeepers on technical accounting and tax topics
  • Support the development of scalable internal systems

Who You Are

  • EA or CPA with 5+ years of public accounting experience
  • Confident preparing entity tax returns (1120S, 1065, 1120)
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on clean, accurate financials
  • Comfortable reviewing bookkeeping work and coaching others
  • Clear and professional communicator with clients and internal staff
  • Thrives in a small, collaborative, high-trust environment
  • Interested in long-term stability and meaningful technical work
  • Open to learning cannabis-specific accounting practices (experience a plus, but not required)
  • Cost & Inventory Accounting Experience
  • Drake and Canopy Software experience is a plus
