Accounting Officer

Work Environment The work is flexible and fully remote. The Accounting Officer must be able to work independently and have good organizational skills to meet the organization’s needs and goals. 

Accounting Officer Compensation Part-time / Non-Exempt: $30,769.50 ($29.58 / hour) for approximately 1040 hours annually  

Budget Management, Reporting, and Analysis

  • Evaluate information to prepare a realistic and balanced budget for the Non-Profit and forecast annual budgets.
  • Maintain accurate financial data, including accurate monthly financial statements.
  • Monitor financial performance and analyze the cost-benefit performance of operations.
  • Identify causes of significant variance and take prompt corrective action.
  • Propose revisions to the budget if necessary in response to unforeseen developments.
  • Submit monthly accounting reports to CEO.
  • Responsible for the accuracy and integrity of accounting records.

Daily Financial Operations

  • Assist stakeholders with questions concerning their personalized monthly or annual financial reports.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
  • Ensure accurate and timely processing of donations, including all donation gateways.
  • Pay suppliers/vendors promptly.
  • Ensure all budgets remain up-to-date and accurate.

Audit, Tax, and Compliance

  • Maintain a continuous audit (assess company’s accounting practices and risk controls on an ongoing basis), for all funds.
  • Oversight of all tax-related tasks, including filing annual 1099s and collaborating with External Auditors for the annual report and 990 filings.
  • Ensure that the accounting and financial system are set to comply with applicable laws, regulations, and required standards.
  • Responsible for reviewing and supporting the third-party payroll processing company and ensuring compliance with applicable taxes.
  • Work with tax consultants and legal attorneys as appropriate and needed.

 Miscellaneous 

  • Create and maintain an appropriate, up-to-date internal control manual that aligns with best practices.

 Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required 

  • Hold a degree in accounting with at least 3 years of experience (preferably in nonprofit work). CPA certification and tax work are a plus.
  • Computer literate and must be familiar with accounting systems and QuickBooks
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Work a minimum of 20 hours a week—flexible work schedule to meet personal commitments.
  • Ability to prioritize workload to ensure that deadlines are met without compromising standards or circumventing procedure
  • Varied and relevant experience managing a financial accounting function, including audit and tax work.
