Objectives

  • Recruitment: we focus on the steps to recruit a diverse, talented board. We cover creating and using a board matrix to identify gaps on the board, ways to cultivate a pool of strong candidates, and methods for vetting, preparing, and nominating new members.
  • Engagement: we explore ways to genuinely engage and involve board members in governance rooted in the mission.
  • Renewal: we champion the importance of embracing new ideas and energy. We offer two kinds of assessments to support evaluation processes and also ways to rotate (and even remove) board members. Last but not least, we discuss methods to celebrate success along the way.

His volunteer service has focused on outreach to marginalized communities in Oklahoma and around the world. In 2018, Matthew began an outreach service to people experiencing homelessness in South Oklahoma City, eventually founding the Southern Hills Outreach Foundation; a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that exists today as one of the largest outreach services of its type in the Oklahoma City Metro area. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for Skyline Urban Ministries in Oklahoma City, and has served as the past chair of the Provisional Committee for the United Methodist Board of Ordained Ministry (BoM), interview facilitator on the BoM’s Doctrine and Polity team, the Chair of the Heartland District Missional Strategy Team, member of the Wichitas District Missional Strategy Team, member of the Wichitas District Superintendency Committee, member of the (formerly) Stillwater District Council, member of the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, and the Leadership Development Ministry Team, all within the governance structure of the Oklahoma Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
