Salary Guide

A recent study showed accountants with at least one professional certification, such as a CPA license, reported substantially higher salaries than accountants with no certification. On average, the survey said CPAs usually make at least $20, 000 more than accountants without their CPA license. Read more about this accounting salary survey.

Sample Degree Plan

Once you decide to pursue an accounting degree, it's important to keep track of your college credit hours. The passing of Senate Bill 1488 has resulted in significant changes to the scholastic requirements for future CPAs, beginning November 1, 2004. 1488 changed the number of semester hours a candidate for the examination must have in accounting courses (above principles/introductory) from 36 to 30, and made the one-year experience requirement a substitute for the 6 hours. The bill, requested by Oklahoma Accounting Educators, also added more flexibility to take courses that will improve related skill levels among prospective accountants.

Experience Requirement

To apply for CPA certification in the state of Oklahoma, in addition to passing all sections of the CPA Exam, you must fulfill a one-year experience requirement. This requirement equates to 1800 hours of employment and must be verified by a CPA, PA or other individual approved by the Oklahoma Board of Accountancy. To find out if your current experience qualifies, contact the OAB at 405/521-2397.

Work experience must have been obtained within the four (4) years immediately prior to filing the application for certification. This requirement may be satisfied through work experience in government, industry, academia, or public practice. Acceptable work experience includes accounting, attest, tax, and related services. If the work experience is denied, the applicant may file a written request with the OAB for a review of the denial.

The difference between an accountant and a CPA

CPAs and Accountants have the same goal in mind: ensuring the truthfulness of financial information. Both are comfortable with mathematics and financial trends, and both work to improve their client's bottom line. However, there are some notable differences between the two career options. With a degree in accounting, an employer knows that your technical skills and understanding of accounting principles and procedures will be an asset to the organization. However, recent grads carrying the CPA designation have the advantage when competing for high-paying, entry-level accounting positions. The advantage is a direct result of the extra time, dedication and hard work CPAs put forth to secure success in their career. Upon certification, CPAs are required to continue the pursuit of excellence through annual continuing education requirements that preserve and extend the esteem and influence of the Certified Public Accountant Career.
